Region Overview
The East Midlands spans another large part of the country, starting in Leicestershire and stretching to parts of Lincolnshire. Its two biggest areas, Leicester and Nottingham, are both classified as sufficiency-level world cities, as decreed by the Globalisation and World Cities Research Network.
Despite its size, the East Midlands has the second-lowest population density in England, after the South West. This is mainly due to the population of Rutland. Studies show the region is less socially-deprived than the West Midlands, with academic statisticians claiming the East Midlands straddles the north-south divide.
Most secondary schools in the East Midlands are comprehensive, although there are still 15 grammar schools in Lincolnshire. There are also 18 further education colleges.

Area opportunities
Leicester is the largest city in the East Midlands by unitary authority measurements, although Nottingham is the biggest conurbation as a built-up area.
Nottingham has the most prosperous economy, too, although Leicester comes a close second and is also the most ethnically-diverse city in the East Midlands.
Leicester is home to a host of comprehensive and independent schools, along with three sixth-form colleges, all of which were previously grammar schools.
There are three further education colleges in Nottingham, along with 20 sixth-form colleges and academies and several independent schools.
Leicester is also home to two universities, while Nottingham has three. The two cities, quite rightly, stand out in the East Midlands.
Other Cities and Towns
Derby is one of two other cities in the East Midlands, with a population of nearly 250,000. Lincoln also holds city status, which houses close to 100,000 people.
Northampton is one of the largest towns in England, while Mansfield and Chesterfield also have populations of 100,000 plus.
Kettering, Corby and Wellingborough are in close proximity to Northampton, while Loughborough is next to Leicester.
Chesterfield is the gateway between the East Midlands and Yorkshire, as it’s just 11 miles away from Sheffield.
The seaside town of Skegness is the largest settlement in the East Lindsey district and has two secondary schools, plus four colleges.
