Region Overview

The North West is the third most-populated region in the United Kingdom, with over seven million people making up 13 per cent of the UK’s total inhabitants. It occupies 5,469 square miles with the counties of Cheshire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester, Lancashire and Merseyside contained within. The North West extends from the Scottish Borders, in the north, to the West Midlands, in the south, and is bounded to the east by the Pennines and to the west by the Irish Sea.

There are around 345,000 pupils in the North West at secondary school, which are mainly comprehensive apart from Trafford, which is wholly selective. Lancashire consistently achieves some of the best results in the country at A level and has some grammar schools, as do Wirral, Liverpool and Cumbria.

Its wider metropolitan economy is the second-largest in the UK, with the biggest office market outside of London.

Manchester’s three universities are grouped around Oxford Road, making up Europe’s most substantial urban higher-education precinct.

Liverpool also has three universities and a further education college, to supplement the state schools that are already in place.
