Region Overview

The South East continues to prosper with the second-largest economy of any region in the UK, after London, and has the highest population with over nine million.

Contained within are the counties of Buckinghamshire, East Sussex, West Sussex, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Surrey.

The South East is not served by any directly-elected regional government, but has a development agency which oversees investment projects.

Buckinghamshire, Medway and Kent employ a selective education system, which is a mix of grammar and secondary modern schools. The other areas are comprehensive.

Kent has the biggest number of sixth-formers of any conurbation in England, while Buckinghamshire consistently records the highest results at GCSE level.

Area opportunities and Key Stats

Area opportunities

Brighton and Hove is the largest city in the South East, having joined together to form a unitary authority in 1997 before obtaining city status four years later.

The two were formerly separate towns, before combining to make England’s most-populated seaside resort, located in the county of East Sussex.

Brighton and Hove City Council is responsible for 80 schools, of which 53 are in Brighton. There is a further education and sixth-form college, plus the privatised Hove College.

State schools are supplemented by faith and independent establishments, plus a fully-accredited music college, the Brighton Institute of Modern Music.

Undergraduates can choose from the University of Brighton and the University of Sussex. Together, they’ve also formed the Brighton and Sussex Medical School.
