Region Overview

The ‘East’ of England begins where London ends so, as you’d expect, it’s easy to reach from the capital, with the southern part of the region situated in the commuter belt. It consists of the counties of Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and the area known as East Anglia.

There are around 255,000 pupils at their secondary schools, with selective schools in Essex and Southend-on-Sea. This is supplemented by 27 further education colleges. Additionally, there are eight universities in the East of England, including the University of Cambridge, which has been rated as the best in the world.

The region has the highest-proportion of post-graduate students in the country, with 45 per cent of those at under-graduate level native to the East of England.

Area opportunities

Peterborough is the biggest city in the East of England, but is historically part of Northamptonshire. Norwich, in Norfolk, is the next largest city.

Housing and population are rapidly expanding in Peterborough, with a £1billion regeneration underway which has already transformed the city.

The city’s state schools have been revamped, with five out of 15 closed and demolished while the rest have been enlarged. There are two colleges of further and higher education.

Norwich is regarded as the most complete medieval settlement in the UK and has proven culture, becoming England’s first UNESCO City of Literature.

It has 56 primary schools and 13 secondary schools, 11 of which are academies. There are also five schools for children with learning disabilities.

Other Cities and Towns

Southend-on-Sea is the largest town in the East of England, with the world’s longest pier that stretches some 1.34 miles from shore.

The cathedral city of St Albans, in Hertfordshire, is within the London commuter belt and has been a satellite of the capital since Roman times.

The city of Cambridge and Ipswich are 45 miles apart and are of similar size, with Ipswich a tourist hotspot as one of England’s oldest towns.

Hornchurch has grown into a suburban town, while Great Yarmouth is the popular seaside resort of Norfolk. Sudbury, in Suffolk, is a market town.

Haverhill is a  staple of Suffolk, sitting 14 miles away from Cambridge. Ely is another cathedral city and houses just over 20,000 people.
